The most important effect that we can have as architects is on the users of our buildings; we have to meet the programmatic requirements and create beautiful spaces, but more to the point, we must create designs that show respect for all the people using them.

This means, when working on an arts facility, one tries to simultaneously respect the performers, artists, crew and audience by accommodating the complex and dynamic activities occurring within the space. In an educational facility, one strives to create spaces that serve teachers as well as kids — especially the kids — and in which they can learn, grow and feel respected.

When you can accomplish these effects, it’s very rewarding. After all, you may work for three or four years on a project and achieve something you can be proud of. However, if you’ve really succeeded, other people will enjoy and benefit from your work not only now, but for generations to come.
