Afraid of Heights?

The crane here reaches to a height of 270 feet, and is fitted with a very comfortable basket to hold two persons. It was already in place at Healy Hall (Georgetown University) to allow repairs to the clock and clock faces of the central tower which is over 200 feet tall. When the earthquake hit Washington, DC on Tuesday, August 23rd, the painters were up in the basket – and in Spanish, they reported quite a ride - the basket jumped 3 to 4 feet all at once.

Zoos as Community

Over lunch a few weeks ago, I got into a conversation about the future of zoos and the best ways the institution could serve the community and act as a flag bearer for conservation efforts both locally and around the world. Zoos are a place we go to experience nature, to connect with animals, to learn, to bond with family and friends. It is a place that sparks a sense of child-like wonder. It is where we take our children to show them what an amazing planet this is.

My Foray Into Green Product Land

There are many different variances of just how “green” a person is willing to be. Some will donate goods to the Salvation Army, others may purchase Energystar approved appliances to reduce their energy consumption, while another may decide to grow their own produce, and the list goes on. Being green has become increasingly popular over the years, especially with familiar companies touting a plethora of new “green” everything.
