This all-Black, 1920s-era school figured centrally in the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education. Following QEA’s careful rehabilitation, the former school made its new debut as an interpretive museum and National Park Service administrative office. Sustainable design strategies guided us throughout the restoration, including the introduction of a new geothermal heating and cooling system. Our transformation emphasized building reuse, sustainable and recycled content materials, natural daylighting and ventilation, and urban redevelopment.
