The Peabody Conservatory, in the heart of the historic Mount Vernon Place district, is the country’s oldest academy of music. Over time, the Conservatory lost its connection with the neighborhood and buildings nearby. QEA’s transformational design features a series of cascading stairways and connecting structures to enliven what had been a gap between the Conservatory and an adjacent building — creating a new campus gateway along with education, performance and rehearsal spaces. In the adjoining George Peabody Library, we converted a staid reading room into a flexible exhibition.
