Earth Day is just around the corner and Quinn Evans Architects would like to invite you to join us in practicing sustainability.

This event will be celebrated across many cities in the United States and the world, all with their own activities and greening efforts. To help clean the environment, we have come up with the top 10 things you can do on Earth Day to make a difference. We challenge you to do at least one!

BIKE TO WORK
We all know the adverse effects motorized vehicles have on the environment. This coming Earth Day you can choose a different mode of transportation to and from work. The most popular has always been biking, but if you don’t own one, you can also walk, use public transportation, or carpool with a coworker!

24 HOURS IN THE DARK
Commit to living one full day in the dark. You can achieve this by turning off all electronics and light fixtures around your house. Turn off your air conditioner and open a window.

PLANT A TREE
Help clean the air we breathe by planting a tree. You can do this in your backyard or at a park, with the proper permits. Learn how you can plant a tree here

DONATE TO A LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATION
In the United States, there are hundreds of environmental organizations that use their funds for a variety of projects that include cleanup efforts, green infrastructures, and lobbying for better environmental regulations. Spend some time researching a good fit for you and donate!

10 MINUTE SHOWER CHALLENGE
Water is a precious resource and we should use it wisely. In celebration of Earth Day, try to challenge yourself, family, and friends to take 10 minute showers for an entire week.

AUDIT YOUR HOME ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Make sure your home or apartment is performing at its most energy efficient levels. Learn more about a DIY energy audit here

VOLUNTEER FOR AN ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATION
If you have the time, this can be a wonderful way to involve family and friends in green activities. Research a local environmental organization and sign-up to volunteer for a river clean-up, planting trees, etc.

GO PAPERLESS
Forget about paper bills, it’s time to go fully digital. Log into all of your accounts and opt out of paper billing.

LIGHTS GO LIGHT
Using the wrong lighting bulbs is bad for the environment, not to mention costly for your energy bills. Learn more about environmentally friendly bulbs here and spend a day changing all the bulbs in your home.

FIX THAT LEAK
Leaking faucets can waste a significant amount of water on a yearly basis. Do a quick sweep around your house to look for leakage and hire a local plumber to help you fix the leaks.
