Ajay Gulati, the lead fire protection engineer at the National Zoo, has published an article in the November 2012 issue of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Connect Magazine on the importance of providing fire protection at animal holding areas within the zoo, and the associated unique challenges of designing the system.
Major work addressing animal safety has been accomplished by QEA and our consultants The Protection Engineering Group working in partnership with NZP life safety, animal keeping and public programs staff. Over the past five years a series of QEA projects affecting 26 facilities, has enabled NZP and the Smithsonian to assess and address fire-related animal safety issues through installation of customized fire suppression systems.
QEA's animal safety work continues today with ground-breaking work to incorporate smoke control into the existing Giant Panda House facility
