As I walked to the grand opening of the newest green alley and pocket park in Midtown I realized that after years of working to transform Detroit, that Detroit was beginning to transform me. I am a true Michigander of my generation – I love my car. But lately, I am not driving nearly as much as I have in the past. Living and working in Midtown I find myself increasingly walking – walking to one of the many restaurants nearby (including some with fantastic food), walking to the Detroit Institute of the Arts, and walking just for the fun of it with a toddler who loved all the bulldozers and back hoes at work in the neighborhood. Who knows, soon I may even abandon my beloved car and walk to our new offices overlooking Woodward Avenue with a view to the skyline of downtown Detroit.
