Eastern Market
Washington, DC

A fire sparked the rehabilitation and renewal of this landmark building into a state-of-the-art public market facility. Retaining the historic integrity of the market, we integrated a 21st-century food market into the century-old civic building, honoring its heritage and serving the shopping needs of the community. Together with the City and citizens, our team rebuilt, restored and modernized the Market’s only remains—masonry walls and floors. Modernizing the sustainable strategies of the original architect, our rehabilitation efforts focused on restoring and optimizing daylight and natural ventilation throughout the market hall. The design further improved patrons’ comfort through the addition of contemporary restrooms and ADA accessibility from all points of entry.
