Constructed in 1878, the Michigan State Capitol is a National Historic Landmark with a 287-foot-high cast iron dome.

The building was designed by the preeminent post-Civil War architect Elijah E. Meyers in a Neoclassical, Italianate style. From 1989-1992, Quinn Evans Architects guided the complete exterior renovation of the capitol, including its iconic dome, as well as the rehabilitation of the Executive Wing interior. Subsequently, QEA has returned to the State Capitol to conduct several ongoing restoration projects, including a 2014 exterior maintenance assessment and documents to maintain the historic exterior masonry and dome.

The restoration of the Michigan State Capitol recaptured the Victorian-era character of the stately building while creating highly flexible and efficient office space within the Governor’s Wing. The project scope included a comprehensive restoration of the building envelope. This restoration included repair of the sandstone masonry and the cast-iron and sheet metal dome, complete roof replacement, replacement of deteriorated and damaged original windows with custom-made wood windows replicating the original design.

Subsequently, QEA has returned to the State Capitol to conduct several restoration projects, including a 2014 exterior assessment, documents to restore the historic exterior masonry and dome, and upgrades to lighting. QEA also implemented a Historic Building Information Management System which integrates geographic information systems (GIS) and building information modeling (BIM) in a unified graphic user interface. The three-dimensional model and database provides unprecedented ability to manage and access historical documentation, records, and as-built conditions.
