With its mission as the development of “Morehouse Men” – men of disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service - Morehouse College occupies a prestigious place in American history as the alma mater to generations of prominent African-American men, including such notables as Maynard Jackson and Martin Luther King, Jr.

  • 61 Acres
  • Urban Campus

In recent years, the College has found that mission increasingly difficult to fulfill, primarily due to an outdated physical plant woefully ill-suited to 21st-century academic needs. Recognizing that addressing those needs required creative actions based on thoughtful planning, Morehouse asked Quinn Evans Architects to lead a multi-disciplinary team of nationally-recognized architects, planners and urbanists in the creation of a bold new vision for its campus.

Determining the Nucleus

Working closely with the College, the planning team assessed every facility on campus in order to determine which should remain to serve as the nucleus of the revitalized community. Building around a core of historic buildings located on Morehouse’s Centennial Green, the plan called for the dramatic renewal of the balance of the campus.

Bold Moves

The boldest move in the sequence is the relocation of Morehouse’s crumbling football stadium to a new multi-purpose athletic facility to be built on land immediately west of the main campus. That move, paired with the demolition of several other outdated facilities, will create room in the heart of the campus for the new academic, residential and administrative facilities that will define the campus for decades to come. The cornerstone of the renovated campus will be a 50,000 sf, state-of-the-art student center facing a newly-created campus green. Other facilities in the approximately $500 million in new construction envisioned by the master plan include five new academic buildings with over 220,000 sf of learning space, seven new residence halls, two parking structures, a new administration building and the athletic complex. The master plan for Morehouse College represents an incredibly bold and ambitious vision for one of America’s most important institutions of higher education.

“We believe that if we can establish the world of our dreams on this campus, then we will finally be able to establish the world of our dreams on this earth.”
John Silvanus Wilson, Former Morehouse College President
