 Project

Cecil County Public Library is a national award-winning library system whose services go far beyond books and makes a critical difference in the community by supporting education, small businesses, workforce, veterans’ services, and more. With the goal of being a 21st-century library for all citizens to access books, educational materials, services, technology, and high-speed broadband, the library has a variety of spaces. One of the key features includes a state-of-the-art early childhood learning center—an engaging space for children ages birth to five, where they can develop early learning skills and school readiness. There is also a teen room for exploration, computing, and studying; various adult reading areas; STEM lab for hands-on learning; business commons with expanded services for small business owners and entrepreneurs; and a variety of meeting rooms and small group study areas. This new two-story facility is located on a visible, convenient, and accessible centrally located site in a retail center. The design takes advantage of the site’s adjacent wooded area, and the large windows at the back of the library maximize natural daylight. The rear of the building also includes a large patio area, providing more connection opportunities. The building serves as a branch library, as well as the new headquarters for the Cecil County Public Library administrative staff.

The Solution

Quinn Evans has been an exceptional partner throughout the entirety of the new North East Branch Library project. They developed an understanding and appreciation for this community that has translated to highly responsive, functional, affordable design and- above all- an absolutely transformational learning space that will serve and inspire the community for decades to come. This is most reflected on the second floor of the library, where we have collaborated to create a purposeful range of engaging, hands-on educational spaces for youth from birth through adolescence. In part, we credit the extraordinary result to the time they spent in our local schools meeting with students and teachers to understand their unique needs and goals for their public library. They have truly helped us to achieve architectural design and engineering that brings forth new ideas and enhances the way our award-winning library system can meet the needs of Cecil County. Our community can be extremely proud of this beautiful new library that reflects its greatest attributes and aspirations, many thanks to the talent of the team at Quinn Evans.
