QEA engaged in a consensus-based design process with internationally-renowned Zingerman’s Delicatessen to expand its iconic business on a challenging urban site.
The new building, designed to be compatible with its historic neighborhood, more than doubled the Deli’s square footage, improved patron access and circulation, and relocated intensive uses out of the historic buildings. Reflecting the Deli’s commitment to its customers, the business remained open throughout the construction process.
Commitment to Green
As a business steeped in its community, Zingerman’s Deli was committed to creating a highly sustainable environment. In addition to standard approaches such as energy-efficient building systems, a reflective roof, and the use of recycled and renewable materials, QEA designed creative solutions for reducing the traditionally energy intensive food service operations, including recapturing waste heat from refrigeration units. The urban infill site also utilizes stormwater management and native plantings to minimize its environmental impact.
