Planning for the Future

Fair Lane

Fair Lane

Dearborn, Michigan

Built by Henry and Clara Ford in 1915, the Fair Lane estate is situated on the banks of the Rouge River. Over more than two decades, we have worked to help protect this National Historic Landmark long into the future.

We first developed a comprehensive site and building master plan, engaging in an inclusive and collaborative planning process with a variety of stakeholders. The resulting plan provided a framework for both capital projects and ongoing maintenance and has served as a road map for the subsequent care of the estate’s buildings and remarkable landscape.

We have implemented several projects around the estate that further the plan’s goals, including restorations of courtyards, roof terraces, and balconies that allowed interior work to progress. We also restored the exterior of the Powerhouse, an on-site hydroelectric plant whose machinery was designed by the Fords’ good friend Thomas Edison.
