Building Community

New Residence Hall

New Residence Hall

Coppin State University
Baltimore, Maryland

The New Residence Hall represents a critical step toward creating a thriving Living-Learning Center that strengthens the existing Campus Commons and deepens a sense of campus-wide community. It’s designed to cultivate a sense of belonging and engagement—pivotal qualities for the development of students’ social and soft skills.

Designed in partnership with Goody Clancy, the project expands Coppin State University’s on-campus housing capacity to allow all freshmen to live on campus. Ideally situated at the crossroads between academic facilities to the south and athletic and campus recreation facilities to the north, the site presents an opportunity to strengthen the existing pedestrian spine and knit together the residential and academic zones of the campus.

The crescent-shaped building creates a courtyard along a pedestrian thoroughfare, extending the Campus Commons and embracing the Fanny Jackson Coppin monument. The first and lower levels traverse a steep grade change, connect the welcoming entries from the west and north, and provide expansive common spaces including a communal kitchen, study rooms, and laundry facilities. Each residential floor features a lounge and two to three additional study rooms.
