Peake Childhood Center
Peake Childhood Center
The new Peake Childhood Center exemplifies an innovative and holistic approach to early childhood care and education that integrates high-quality instruction, teacher training, and family services.
Our design is inspired by building blocks, symbolizing the foundation for learning. We designed the classrooms with distinct areas for a variety of activities, including creative play, group work, focused reading, and “wet” activities like art projects. Advanced acoustical design allows for open environments while maintaining a conducive learning atmosphere.
By prioritizing the needs of both children and families, this center represents a key investment in a historically underserved community.
This facility represents more than just a place of learning. It is a commitment to ensuring all children, regardless of their background, are ready to succeed when they begin school.

Teaching the Teachers
The new facility houses Virginia Peninsula Community College’s Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Development, a new program that trains teachers, administrators, and families by providing opportunities for student-teaching, professional development, and community education. The Center includes classrooms, offices, and gathering spaces to support the program.

A Welcoming Entry
A transparent and light-filled entry integrates layered access, rendering it both secure and inviting. Administrators have expansive views of the parking lot, entry, and lobby. A waiting area and meeting space just inside the entrance accommodate families during drop-offs, pick-ups, and teacher conferences.

Design for Wellbeing
The building encloses an outdoor learning and play courtyard with a variety of equipment that facilitates exercise and the development of fine motor skills. Large windows in the corridors, classrooms, and multipurpose room form connections between indoor and outdoor activities and the community beyond.
