Renewing the Gateway to Our Nation’s Capital

Arlington Memorial Bridge

Arlington Memorial Bridge

Washington, DC

A carefully researched restoration of the monumental “Avenue of Heroes” protects and preserves this historic gateway to our nation’s capital. Arlington Memorial Bridge is a vital transportation link between Virginia and Washington, DC, and has served for nearly a century as the ceremonial grand entrance to the capital’s monumental core.

To prepare Arlington Memorial Bridge for a second century of service, our team undertook a $227-million design-build rehabilitation to ensure its structural integrity while preserving its memorial character and unique design elements. Our work safeguards the structure’s unique heritage while optimizing its safety and resilience.

As one of the largest transportation projects in National Park Service history, the rehabilitation of Arlington Memorial Bridge gives new life to our capital’s ceremonial entrance while respecting its character, history, and national significance.

A Monumental History

Arlington Memorial Bridge opened in 1932 as a symbol of reconciliation and unity between the North and South after the Civil War. It crosses the Potomac River on the axis between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington House, once the home of Robert E. Lee and now part of Arlington National Cemetery.

Conserving a Landmark

As the team’s historic preservation architect, we assessed the impact of design alternatives on the structure’s significant historic features. We designed the replacement of the steel bascule draw span, restoration of the steel bascule fascia and aluminum balustrade, and repair of the granite balustrade and ashlar facing.

Navigating Agency Reviews

Working closely with the Federal Highway Administration, the contractor, and the National Park Service, we prepared the submission package and were instrumental in securing regulatory agency approval for the complex design from the US Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission.

Supporting Health and Safety

Arlington Memorial Bridge is a key pedestrian and bicycle crossing for both commuters and people enjoying the scenic trails along the Potomac River. Our work replaced and reopened the bridge’s wide sidewalks, which had been partially closed for due to safety concerns.
