A Community Catalyst

Grissom Library

Grissom Library

Newport News, Virginia

The new Grissom Library serves a dual civic role: a branch library for the Denbigh-Warwick community and the administrative headquarters of the Newport News Public Library.

Conceived as a threshold between city and landscape, learning and community, the library is defined by a powerful architectural idea: a large, sheltering canopy of exposed mass timber that brings people together under a shared civic roof. From the earliest stages of the project, this clear vision inspired library leadership and city stakeholders alike, establishing an ambitious design that celebrates both innovation and the area’s maritime heritage.

Grissom Library represents a bold investment in the future. It embodies the City of Newport News’ evolving vision for public space—one that values sustainability, community engagement, and design quality—while standing as a welcoming gateway to knowledge, connection, and opportunity for generations to come.

When you look across what makes a strong community, it's convening, it's the ability to come together to have those meetings, to read books. It's more than a library.

Inspired by History

Our design draws inspiration from Newport News’ history, which has been shaped by Indigenous communities, waterways, and a shipbuilding tradition. Craft and materiality play a central role, connecting contemporary construction with a sense of place through the expressive use of mass timber and carefully considered detailing.

Designed for Discovery

Clear sightlines connect entrances, collections, and gathering spaces, creating an intuitive and welcoming experience. Fluid movement between the exterior and interior encourages exploration, while a central courtyard draws daylight deep into the building and invites moments of reflection. Warm, natural materials reinforce a sense of belonging and strengthen the connection between people and place.

Reaching Out

A large community meeting space expands the library’s public reach, providing infrastructure to host televised City Council meetings and other civic gatherings. In this way, the building becomes more than a collection of books and services—it serves as a center for learning, governance, and community connection.

According to Plan

Grissom Public Library is the centerpiece of our master plan for the Sherwood Site, a former shopping center along a major thoroughfare. The plan envisions a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly, and sustainable mixed-use area anchored by the library, which serves as a catalyst for future growth and a bridge between new development and the natural riparian environment adjacent to the property.
