Our renovation of this sprawling multipurpose building has prepared it to serve Baltimore’s Jewish community for another generation.
Originally constructed in 1958 and expanded several times, the 110,000-sf building has housed many of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore’s agencies and partner organizations over the years, creating a patchwork of renovations. When a school and daycare moved out, The Associated saw an opportunity to holistically renew the building—and relocate their headquarters and agencies on a consolidated campus.
We adapted the building to support three primary tenants—The Associated, JCC of Greater Baltimore, and a large community center—along with a variety of flexible spaces that are shared between the primary tenants and more than a dozen additional organizations.

A New Front Door
We relocated the main entry to create a larger, centralized, secure lobby. A new entry plaza and reconfigured parking address pedestrian safety, reduce congestion, facilitate drop-offs, and create a landscaped zone in front of the entry. Once inside the lobby, users are intuitively directed to their destination: the offices, fitness center, or community areas.

Making Connections
Lounges on either side of the lobby create gathering and waiting spaces, allowing visitors to get their bearings within the large building. Cohesive wayfinding, room identification and donor signage, and a consistent color palette contribute to a cohesive experience for the various user groups.
