Connecting People to Place

Lyon Township Public Library

Lyon Township Public Library

South Lyon, Michigan

Our design for this new public library takes inspiration from the community’s rural legacy and the site’s natural features.

We first guided the Lyon Township Library Board through a comprehensive process to determine an appropriate size for their new library, evaluate potential sites, and establish cost factors. A key element of the process was engaging with library staff, board members, and the community. The resulting Needs Assessment and Feasibility Report, along with a concept design, provided the township board with the information they needed to craft ballot language and for library supporters to conduct a successful millage campaign.

With three times the square footage of the library it replaced, the new library has dedicated spaces for children, teens, and adults; multiple study rooms; and two multipurpose rooms for library programs and community events. Large windows and an outdoor reading deck connect patrons to the surrounding wetland, which have been enhanced with plantings of Michigan native species.

There was no place for people to sit down, read, or study [before]. Now we have all these beautiful places in the library where people can sit and study and have a meeting… I love watching the look on people’s faces when they walk through the door.
