A Home for Matisse

Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies

Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies

Baltimore Museum of Art
Baltimore, Maryland

A new wing dedicated to the art of Henri Matisse shines a spotlight on the largest public collection of his works. This new resource provides areas for the exhibition, study, and discussion of Matisse’s sculpture and works on paper, which continue to inspire contemporary artists and museum visitors.

A study room and library provide space for scholarly research and close viewing of the artwork. Toward the Museum’s mission to make art more accessible, our inclusive design process involved a collaboration with renowned artist Stanley Whitney. The result is a specially commissioned stained glass work called Dance With Me Henri which is incorporated into the gallery walls.

Our vision for the Marder Center is to engage scholars and the public alike by dedicating new space where individuals can learn and engage with Matisse’s work and each other.
