Libraries for Today and Tomorrow
Grosse Pointe Public Library
Grosse Pointe Public Library
Major interior and site renovations have repositioned all three branches of the Grosse Pointe Public Library to better serve the community. While the Central Library, Ewald Branch, and Woods Branch are very different buildings, their staff were facing some common challenges: the need for more casual and group study areas; noise control in youth areas; better sightlines from circulation desks; and accessibility improvements indoors and out. We developed creative solutions to make these existing buildings functional for today and flexible for the future.
We’re dedicated to preserving the historic character of the [Central Library] building. We didn’t want to alter the key mid-century modern features… I’m really pleased with how it turned out.
Central Library
A strategic addition and site modifications have updated this Marcel Breuer-designed library for a new generation. The addition greatly expands the children’s area and created a new drive-up book window and elevator. For the first time ever, the main entrance of the 1953 building is fully accessible thanks to a major plaza renovation.
Ewald Branch
We reorganized this 2005 branch library to improve circulation, optimize staff spaces, and enhance security. In addition to updating finishes throughout the building, we created a new study and café area near the entry. A co-located circulation and reference desk streamlines the patron experience and improves staff workflows.
Woods Branch
Our work at the 2006 Woods Branch focused on helping the library support students from the adjacent middle school. We provided a new entrance facing the school and created a shared activity plaza to host a variety of events. Inside, a new maker space, recording studio, and café enhance opportunities for collaboration.
