Ultra-Sustainable Housing
Compound Rowhouses
Compound Rowhouses
Quinn Evans partnered with the City of Baltimore and arts nonprofit The Compound on a transformative artist housing project. We combined four derelict row homes into two innovative communal residential units designed to achieve Phius certification. With a focus on energy efficiency, this standard establishes tight air-sealing, super-insulating detailing, and ultra-high efficiency mechanical systems that brings these revitalized buildings close to net zero energy consumption.
A new air and thermal barrier wraps all exposures of the building envelope while allowing the legacy of the historic buildings to remain visible on the exterior and within select locations on the interior. A third-floor addition provides large studio spaces that open onto roof decks topped with skylights and photovoltaic arrays.
The construction methods for passive houses are complex and highly specific. We had no previous knowledge of the process; that was where Quinn Evans was critical.
