Richmond, Virginia’s historic William Fox Elementary School has reopened three years after being heavily damaged in a fire that destroyed its roof and upper floor. Our renovation design preserves the school’s historic character while transforming the 114-year-old building into a modern and innovative learning environment.

The school has been a landmark in the city’s Fan District since 1911 and has educated generations of Richmonders. Hundreds of Fox students, families, alumni, and neighbors attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 6, touring the restored building and celebrating the return of the beloved building just in time for the coming school year.

Our team worked to restore the building’s exterior to its original appearance. Inside, the design upgrades classrooms’ technology and flexibility, introduces collaborative hubs, and creates specialized spaces that support a variety of activities and learning styles—including new learning areas reclaimed from former mechanical rooms.

The school will welcome about 400 students when classes begin on August 18, marking the start of a new chapter for the Fox community.

It’s a beautiful building—it was before. You will see the character is still there. When you walk in, it feels like Fox.
