Small Budget, Big Impact
Saline District Library
Saline District Library
With a $4.5 million budget, we renewed the Saline District Library indoors and out to meet contemporary community needs. We began by partnering with the library to develop a conceptual building and site design grounded in the library’s strategic plan. We followed through with a three-phase renovation of the 33,000-sf building that allowed the library to remain open to the public throughout construction.
The refreshed library features larger program rooms with connected storage, more study rooms, an expanded teen area, and additional lounge-like seating areas for reading and gathering. We reconfigured three service points to improve sightlines between all the desks and allow staff to more easily monitor the entire building, while a revamped staff workroom provides increased privacy and security. Outside, a new plaza provides exterior seating and links to a story trail and pavilion for outdoor programming.
Everyone has talked about how open and beautiful it is. People are amazed that we didn’t actually expand the library because everything feels so much bigger now. It’s a much better use of space.
