Michigan Central Station is the featured case study in the Federal Tax Incentives for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2024, by the National Park Service’s (NPS) Technical Preservation Services office.
The annual report highlights the growing accomplishments of the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives Program, also known as the federal historic tax credit program, which supports private investment in adapting historic buildings while preserving their character and fostering community revitalization.
Following its purchase by the Ford Motor Company in 2018 with plans for a comprehensive renovation, our team worked with the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office and the NPS Technical Preservation Services to identify and address complex technical and programmatic issues. These efforts led to a successful application for federal historic tax credits.
With the support of historic tax credits, the landmark that once sat vacant for 30 years is now beautifully restored and serves as the flagship for Ford’s Corktown innovation district, a place for research, innovation, and economic growth.
